Think of world-changers for a moment. What good world-changers throughout human history come to your mind?

People who made a huge impact. People who blessed others with their lives. People who inspired and did incredible things.

Did they possess something in common? Were they born with titles, or did they get lucky? Did they win the popularity contest or have an easy life? That has to be it: easy life, popularity, titles and luck!

These come no where close. In fact, most world-changers overcame incredible odds and perhaps never possessed a title.

Take George Washington who barely made it out of the French and Indian War alive. Congress almost replaced him as general of the Continental Army at one point, and often, his soldiers were malnourished and ill-equipped. His resolve, perseverence, and nothing short of Divine intervention is why we call ourselves Americans today.

Winston Churchill was almost pronounced a political failure before stepping out of a flawed past to be the unbreakable backbone against horrid Nazism.

The list could go on. Anne Frank being among this noteworthy tribe said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before improving the world!” Seriously? This unwavering belief from a girl who was killed at the hands of her Nazi captors?

This is the one thing world-changers have in common – unwavering belief. They believed they had a purpose in this world, so they made their life count for others. Trials came and with faith and endurance, they resolved to get stronger through the struggles.

Their unwavering belief that they could change the world drove them to action. We know from some of their journals and history that they prepared, they learned, they tried and failed often, but they always got back up!

These people made a difference. They made the same difference one-on-one as they did for millions. Making history was never their intent; making a difference was.

Are you making a difference for somebody today? That’s all it takes. A heart to change this world one person at a time. You can start changing the world TODAY and indeed, it’s a wonderful thought! Be a world-changer!

Flowery Feelings.

How do you make people feel? When someone meets you, do you breathe life into them? Do you truly care for others? Do you listen, not for calculated response, but to truly listen to what they’re saying and how they’re feeling?

When our minds are in a state of uncertainty, fear, competition or comparison, we are not ready to offer hope and grace through encounters with others.

However, we can get to the place where our faith is bolstered, our eye’s on the future, we compete with only ourselves and fear of others’ opinions doesn’t haunt us. This is freedom. This is where living to inspire happens!

Running this morning, the blooming flowers jumped out at me! They are blooming early due to the exceptionally warm winter we’ve had, and they just thrilled my spirit!

Flowers may just be one of the greatest expressions of grace and hope man has discovered. We buy and send millions of flowers for the happiest and saddest occasions in life.

Flowers give you feelings of love and hope! Flowers say so much yet never say a word. Couple things I stopped and considered on Maney Avenue this morning:

  • Flowers are open. They smile at all who walk by. They use open gestures and welcome people and tiny noses in.
  • Flowers are there. They are present. They don’t say anything at all, yet they say so much!
  • Flowers are encouraging! Consistently giving off a feeling of springtime – a feeling of life!
  • Flowers are forgiving. They get trampled on, but they’re resilient and grow again with the same strength and dignity to offer encouragment once again.
  • Flowers are growing. Always soaking in watet, rooted in good soil, and drinking in the sunlight. They know without growth and nutishment, they’ll wither and cease being able to give.

The list can go on and on. Here’s the deal. People will forget what you did and what you said; but, something they’ll hang onto forever is how you made them feel! Be a flower and make people feel incredible about life!

Lesson in Graffiti

If you run, walk or drive through any city, you’re bound to see vivid colors and paintings on bridges, buildings, train-cars, etc.

I remember getting upset when I saw graffiti. It was such a disturbance to what was once a pretty structure – well, maybe not the train cars. Vandals and gangsters are the labels we’ve given there destructive expressionists!

However, since working with inner-city kids and having kids of my own, I realize that too often I’m the one to blame.

Came home a couple months back and Nikki greeted me at the door with a huge hug and said, “Daddy, I drew this story, wanna hear it?”

“Sweetheart, give me a second to put my things up, and I’ll listen to the story you wrote,” was my response. I was about to close my eyes to sleep that night when a wave of guilt rushed over me as I realized I’d forgotten.

Redemption happened the very next moment we had together; but, the thought of the times I haven’t taken the time to listen remains a wrench in my gut.

Maybe we’ve allowed life to get too busy with everything else beside scooping up a loved one to do NOTHING but listen. Ask questions about how they’re doing, feeling, what they’re thinking about, etc.

Imagine the difference in these vandals and gangsters pasts should some leader have taken the time to listen. Listening is caring. Listening is powerful!

We’ve heard the saying that we have two ears for a reason. Take it from someone who enjoys speaking, the most powerful words are the ones you hear – not speak!

Power of Believing in People!

Today more than ever, people need someone to believe in them. Everyone has a story, a backround or some past hurt. This is life. Some overcome; others haven’t yet.

Our belief could be the very thing that changes their paradigm. Four of the most powerful words are, “I believe in you!” Stating these words in a heartfelt way may be the defining moment of change in someone’s life!

Belief is a powerful thing. It’s contagious! It may be as simple as a positive affirmation, yet the flame it lights deep down inside can literally take us from a destructive road and set us on the highway of life’s meaning and purpose!

Several have impacted my life in such a way. When I was 12 years old, my mom wrote me a note I’ve never forgotten. The red ink, white paper and shape of characters are banked in memory, but her message of belief in me is etched on the walls of my mind! Another influence was my piano teacher, Christa. She could have screamed, “You’re all thumbs;  you’ll never tickle the ivories!”; instead, she told me how well I conquered the music theory!

Have you ever been around the person that scrutinizes everybody? How’d they make you feel? Perhaps their own insecurities were being cast on you. These people compare, tear down and don’t take time to empathize with others. On the other hand, there are those who believe the best in people. Sometimes they see the good even when you yourself cannot.

Zig Ziglar said “It’s impossible to consistently behave in a manner inconsistent with how we see ourselves. We can do very few things in a positive way if we feel negative about ourselves.” When you choose to believe in someone, they may very well start believing in themselves and amplify positive behaviours.

Purpose today to live your life being a change agent for people by believing in them! As long as there is breath in our lungs, we should speak redemption and empowerment to those around us.

Accept people for who they are and believe the best in them. See the best even when the person themself can’t see it. You’ll change someone’s life.
